This development opens the door for WESSA to play a significant role in driving environment and sustainability skills development in the local government sector throughout the country.
SustainEd is currently developing two Environmental Practices Skills Programmes for Municipalities:
· One at NQF Level 2 for operators and workers in Waste Management, Water and Sanitation and Parks and Gardens Departments, and
· One at NQF Level 5 for Supervisors and Managers in these same departments
These will be piloted in KZN and Mpumalanga, starting in March 2012. Once revised and improved after the piloting they will be available for rolling out nationally later this year. For more information contact Jonathon Wigley at SustainEd.

WESSA has been an accredited training provider with ETDP as its primary SETA for the last seven years. As part of its accreditation requirements, WESSA has had to develop a rigorous quality management system (QMS) in line with ETDP Education and Training Quality Assurance criteria for accredited training.

Learners from municipalities in five regions around South Africa are in the process of completing their final coursework modules on the LGSETA Environmental Practices Level 2 & 5 skills development programmes. The Environmental Practices Pilot project is part of WESSA's Institute for Sectoral and Occupational Excellence (ISOE) initiative with the LGSETA and forms part of the broader movement toward building South Africa's capacity toward green skills, for a greener economy.
